Uluru is more than a large rock jutting out of the desert landscape, it is sacred to the local Anangu people and their history and it is a national icon to all Australians. Uluru is the heart of Australia, and it’s presence on the vast desert plain is overwhelming to all who see it. Many of those who come to see it, come to see it because of its spectacular sunsets. Almost every evening, cloud permitting, the sun set causes Uluru to glow the most amazing red fiery colour and in June 2011 I had the opportunity to capture this amazing phenomenon. This image is a study of the landscape around Uluru as much as it is of Uluru itself. The open sparseness of the arid land is obvious and it is mirrored in the vast expanse of the sky and connecting the two is Uluru, on fire as the suns final rays rebound off the rock in amazing red hues. Your eye is drawn towards Uluru by its striking simplicity, a massive red rock glowing like fire in the last rays of light.
