The Nepean River flows from the Southern Highlands down past the City of Penrith and into the Hawkesbury River and Broken Bay. And for the early settlers, crossing this river was the greatest step towards opening up the Blue Mountains and beyond. The river has been bridged several times and previous bridges had been washed away by massive floods that plagued this river before it was dammed in 4 separate locations. The railway bridge you can see in this image is the second bridge to carry rail traffic across the river, the original next it is 150 years old and is now the road bridge. Victoria Bridge is an historic Australian bridge and it is now one of the oldest steel bridges in Australia and it was revolutionary for its day. Near this point the river was crossed for the first time in 1813 by Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth and in 1878 the railway first crossed opening up the further expansion of the Nations interior. Now there is talk of replacing the old road bridge with a new crossing, time doesn’t stand still and gradually it becomes history which we leave behind but never forget. The sun is gradually setting on this old bridge and the history it represents is this is what I feel that I’ve captured in this unique image.
