Every winter thousands of Aussies head to the hills to ski in the brief window of opportunity allowed by our short warm winters and many of us head to Mt Hotham, the highest ski resort in the Victorian Alps. For a few short months we live the dream of the European Alpine life with chalets, ski lifts, schnapps and the occasional dump of dreamy powder snow. I have photographed many alpine chalets and apartments and it affords me the opportunity to be in such an amazing place at the best time of year. I was out before sunrise on this morning and it was about -5 degrees Celsius as the dawn broke through and a reddish pre-glow appeared over the peaks. I shot images before and after the sun hit the peaks and in the end the image that stood out was this one. The soft pre-dawn light baths the mountains in warm colour. You can see the Great Alpine Road snaking its way around the mountain to the front and left and to the right is the main resort area and Heavenly Valley and The Orchard. This print is currently hanging in the Mountain Cafe in Dinner Plain, so next time your there have a look and stop for the best lunch on the mountain as well!
