Flynn’s beach is a popular beach near the resort city of Port Macquarie on the New South Wales Mid-North Coast. What makes this place special are the amazing rock formations which were created by ancient lavas flows and which form the rugged coastline and give life to the rainforests which cling to them. I was up before dawn to shoot this beach and I was hoping for light cloud and a nice colourful sunrise but instead I got a heavy overcast sky from early morning storms moving up the coast and the sun only made a brief appearance before disappearing behind the cloud. Sometimes when you are out shooting landscapes your preconceived ideas don’t work because of the weather conditions and yet the result is sometimes better than you had planned for. This was one of those days. My goal was to get a nice soft ocean with a long exposure before the sun rose too high and the bonus was the moody sky which also moved during the exposures creating an amazing effect where the sky above mirrors in shape the water below and gives the image a balance that any other sky probably wouldn’t have. The sea can be a moody place but the weather never stays still which gives us hope for tomorrow that a better day will dawn.
